Intervention Attempt by Ministry of Education

by Yechiel Sever

In response to the blatant attempt by the Ministry of Education to intervene in chareidi chinuch, in ordering the various cities to set up committees to oversee the enrollment of seminar (high school) students in the Bais Yaakov schools, Maranan verabonon HaRav Eliashiv and HaRav Shteinman shlita ruled that there should be no cooperation whatsoever with the committees, and every effort should be made to cancel their operation.

On Tuesday 10 Tammuz the director of the Ministry of Education, Dr. Shimshon Shoshani, sent a letter to the municipal governments of Yerushalayim, Bnei Brak, Modi'in Illit and Beitar Illit, instructing them to set up committees to oversee the registration process of the girls' high schools. The committees would report to the Ministry of Education.

The members of the organization of the directors of the seminars first met at the home of HaRav Shteinman, where the Rosh Yeshiva said that no committees should be formed, and the municipal governments should not cooperate with the Ministry of Education in the matter in any way.

They next went to meet with HaRav Eliashiv, who said that this initiative was a serious attempt to undermine the independence of chareidi education, and every effort should be made to resist it. He also said that the directors should work together with the rabbinical committee of the seminars, and they should appeal to the chareidi members of Knesset for help.
