Ukraine: Lvov Mayor Denies Ruins of Taz Shul Threatened

By R. Hoffman

The mayor of Lvov, Ukraine has denied reports that the preserved remnants of the Golden Rose Synagogue, once headed by the Taz, are slated for demolition to make way for a controversial hotel on the site.

"I want to reassure everyone that no construction has ever taken place at the site of the Golden Rose," Mayor Andriy Sadovyy said in a statement.

"Construction of a hotel on the neighboring Fedorova Street, which has drawn criticism from some civic organizations' representatives, has nothing to do with the site of the former synagogue," he said.

The mayor also said that he and municipal personnel are working on additional projects to memorialize Lvov Jews murdered in the Holocaust.

The Golden Rose Synagogue was almost completely destroyed by the Nazis, and today only its foundations and a portion of the walls and arches remain standing.
