Concerns Over Safety of Tunisian Jewish Community
By Y. Green
The head of Tunisia's Jewish community, Roger Bismuth, met with
Interim Tunisian Prime Minister Mohammed Ghanoucci and asked him to
provide better security for the community.
Fears increased among the country's Jews after dozens of Muslim
demonstrators gathered outside the main beis knesses in the
capital city of Tunis last Friday, voicing threats against the
congregants. Bismuth told reporters that during a weekend meeting
Ghanoucci pledged that the authorities would protect the Jewish
community.
Most of Tunisia's 1,600 Jews live on the island of Djerba and the
remainder reside in the capital. According to local reports, police
continue to provide security near the beis knesses after fire
was set to a synagogue in Tunisia last month. According to Bismuth,
the beis knesses was one of a number of buildings damaged in
rioting and there was no indication that it was specifically
targeted.
