Bnei Brak is Israel's leading city in self-collection of cardboard and of plastic bottles, according to figures released by the Environmental Protection Ministry.
Ministry officials said bottle recycling containers filled up quickly a short time after being installed in Bnei Brak and required emptying at a much faster rate than in other cities in the country.
Ministry officials were surprised to discover that the country's most crowded city, which has a very high percentage of children, came in first place in recycling, which they attributed to proper education.
"The chareidi public, because it is well aware of the obligation to guard both their souls and their physical well-being, feels an obligation to safeguard the children's future," said one official, "and to make every effort to ensure the air they breathe is clear, the water they drink is clean and the environment in which they grow is optimal."
The municipality announced the opening of an urban environment awareness project focused largely on children and youths.
The project calls for an innovative information campaign, branding, education, signs and pamphlets, and an extended ad campaign aimed at youths, activities in talmudei Torah and schools around the city, and an additional 400 recycling containers.
