Degel HaTorah MKs Report to HaRav Eliashiv on Meeting with PM

By Yechiel Sever

"There is no room for the Knesset and MKs to deliberate conversion, which is clearly a halachic issue," said a spokesman for Vaad Harabbonim LeInyonei Giyur, in reaction to ongoing anti-Jewish remarks by Education Minister Gidon Saar, who has now announced his opposition to the Conversion Law, which states that only the Orthodox Rabbinate is authorized to conduct conversions.

"I will oppose the Conversion Law, which will harm relations with world Jewry," said Saar at the Jewish Agency's Board of Directors meeting. "The Government of Israel will not tolerate any attempt to harm the special relations between the State of Israel and world Jewry. Despite the disagreement, we will remain a single people, a single family," he added.

In response Vaad Harabbonim LeInyonei Giyur, founded by HaRav Chaim Kreiswirth zt"l, released a statement saying, "Conversion is clearly a halachic process, and only conversion in accordance with the holy Torah passed down to us since Mt. Sinai, which relates how converts are to be brought into Klal Yisroel, can determine who is a Jew. There is no room for the Knesset or Members of Knesset to deliberate these patently halachic issues, and no MK has the authority to even speak about it. The conversion process must be exclusively in the hands of prominent rabbis who reach decisions based on the rulings of the Shulchan Oruch, in accordance with the tradition handed down through the generations."
