New Zealand Prohibits Shechita
by R Hofner
The Jewish community of New Zealand expressed surprise at the recent ban of shechita in that island country of the south Pacific during the administration of a Jewish prime minister. New regulations prohibit slaughter of animals without first stunning them, which injury renders them treif before their death.
For now, it is permitted to import kosher meat, although the importation of chicken is banned due to health concerns.
In the past some halachic authorities expressed concern about the fact that the country observes Saturday on the day which is halachically not Shabbos, due to its location near the halachic "international date line."
