The Fire at the Gamla Nature Preserve Burned Everything Except the Ancient Shul
by L. S. Wasserman
A fire that destroyed some 30,000 dunam (about 7,500 acres) in the Golan Heights, including parts of the Gamla Nature Preserve that includes the ruins of the city of that name from the time of the Second Beis Hamikdash, stopped short of the ancient shul there on all four sides. In photographs of the aftermath, the shul stands out against the charred area all around. The fire was started on a military firing range in the area.
The Parks Authority attributed the remarkable halt of the fire to the fact that weeds are uprooted around the shul to prevent their encroaching on the ancient ruins. The shul is located at the base of the city, near the defense wall that was attacked and finally breached by the Romans.
