At the advice of gedolei Yisroel, we are continuing to update this site. We plan to post a fuller statement in the future.
Tu B'Shvat Fruit without Bugs
The following are considered Clean Fruit - no checking required. This applies to problems of insect infestation, but not to any other issues of preparation or origin that may involve other kashrus problems. For full instructions about how to check problematic fruit, please download the full Tu B'Shvat fact sheet.
The chareidi world is up in arms over this week's decision by the Shas Party to join the World Zionist Organization (WZO), which has been banned by gedolei Yisroel past and present since its founding 113 years ago. Leading rabbonim were flabbergasted to hear that Shas, which considers itself a chareidi movement, made such a contemptible move by joining an overtly Zionist organization.
The past year has brought a significant increase in the number of antisemitic incidents in Western Europe along with a rise in violent acts against Jews, according to the annual report of the Forum for Countering Antisemitism presented this week by Jewish Agency Chairman Natan Sharansky.
A Dangerous Breach: On the Difference Between the Knesset and Zionist Organizations
We cannot ignore the official announcement of Shas that it has decided to change its basic party platform by embracing the Zionist covenant and incorporating the essential principles as determined by the Zionist movement. At the same time how painful it is to see the Zionist leaders exult and announce this move as a "historical breakthrough" with the creation of a "chareidi-Zionist" party joining the Zionist movement.
The Ideological Case Against Joining the Zionist Movement
The widespread controversy following Shas' decision to join the World Zionist Organization reflects the astonishment at efforts to legitimize cooperation of the chareidi community with the secular nationalist establishment. The underlying worldview of chareidi Jews is that there can be no coming to terms with heresy. The shock with which the recent move of Shas was received points to the trepidation truly G-d-fearing Jews feel toward any undermining of the foundations of our beliefs.
Wrong Address
Since the pained, and admittedly sharp, words of MK Rabbi Moshe Gafni last week in the Knesset about Shas joining the World Zionist Organization (WZO) we have heard bitter reactions [from Shas] whose basis is hard to fathom. One who looks at recent events with a little historical perspective rubs his eyes in wonder. What is incensing them?
