Nouriel Roubini: Israel Recovering from Crash
"Israel is leading the way out of the crisis," said Professor Nouriel Roubini, an economist at New York University who is credited with predicting the deep economic crisis that hit most of the world during the past year. Roubini, an Iranian Jew, is sometimes known as "Dr. Doom" for his gloomy predictions. Roubini recently met with Israel president Shimon Peres at a conference in Italy.
Mishmar HaTorah, the beis din for tznius issues founded by gedolei Yisroel shlita, met last week in the home of beis din member HaRav Moshe Shaul Klein and issued a call "to further buttress the boundaries of halacha regarding tznius and kedushoh as determined by our rabbonim, gedolei Yisroel shlita."
Almost every year, as the Yomim Noraim draw near, questionable dealers latch onto a way to rake in handsome profits: mitzvas tzitzis. Recently chareidi retail outlets have been offering ready-to-wear talleisim kettanim at ridiculously low prices. Sales reach a peak during this time of year as Jews try to sanctify themselves by fulfilling the mitzvah of tzitzis — considered equivalent to all 613 mitzvos — with a set of new tzitzis.
Gedolei horo'oh are warning the public that shatnez has been found in numerous series of imported suits, many of which originate in China, Eastern Europe and Turkey, where wool and linen fibers are often found in combination. An expert told us that factories in these countries sometimes use remnants that they acquire and thus small amounts of clothing can have problems which would not show up if only a sample is tested.
Residents of various Jerusalem neighborhoods are feeling increasingly frustrated over the Transportation Ministry's failure to meet its pledge to make immediate changes in the city's public transportation arrangements, which have left many chareidi passengers — who ride buses more than any other sector — by the wayside.
Seventy years after an operation to save 669 Jewish children from the clutches of the Nazis on the eve of World War II, 22 Holocaust survivors and many family members reenacted the four-day rail and ferry journey from Prague via Germany and Holland to Britain on what came to be known as the Winton Train.
Sderot Mayor David Buskila has issued a scandalous directive to stop funding bus services for children from chareidi families enrolled in schools outside the city, while busing for secular children continues as usual.
In a speech to ranking Jewish leaders South African President Jacob Zuma called on Jewish expatriates to return to the country, according to a JTA report. Commenting on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict he said he supports the "two states for two people" plan to put an end to the occupation that began in 1967. To Do Teshuvoh and to Come Before Hashem
There are two opposite poles when it comes to doing teshuvoh. The first applies to sinners, about which it is written in Neilah: "You extend a hand to sinners and Your right hand is outstretched to receive returners." Also, "You seek the repentance of the wicked and You do not want their death."
