New Motorcycle Unit Will Serve Medics on Shabbos Too

By Yechiel Sever

The first medics' motorcycle unit in Israel, which was launched by United Hatzalah a few weeks ago, will serve medics in responding to emergency calls on Shabbos as well. The motorcycles, which were shown to the rabbinical heads of United Hatzalah, provide a halachic solution for certain parts of the country where medics encounter a halachic problem upon returning home following a response to an emergency.

The board members, who brought the new motorcycles to the home of HaRav Azriel Auerbach who serves as a member of the organization's rabbinical committee, were given instructions on how to operate the motorcycles on Shabbos and discussed with him halachic aspects involved in possibilities to upgrade the motorcycle unit by installing additional aids for medics, such as a public address device.

HaRav Auerbach instructed the Hatzalah board to explain to motorcycle unit members that if driving their car rather than riding the motorcycle will improve the response time, they should not hesitate to use the car, regardless of the advantages of the motorcycles.

In the future, the motorcycles introduced for year-round use to decrease the response time in places with narrow access routes will be used on Shabbos and holidays as well.
