Jerusalem Finishes Planting 80,000 Perennials in
Preparation for Shmittah
The Jerusalem Municipality recently finished an intensive
planting effort in preparation for the Shmittah year,
following a tree-planting effort last month. The annuals the
Municipality typically plants twice a year were taken out to
make room for over 80,000 perennials planted in divider
strips, traffic circles, public parks and various municipal
projects.
The Ramle Magistrate Court remanded eight young Petach Tikva
residents suspected of belonging to a neo-Nazi organization.
Police told the court the prosecution would soon issue
indictments against the gang members, ages 16 to 21.
In a letter to Shimon Gabbai, head of the Investigations
Department at Israel Police Jerusalem District, Betzedek
Director Atty. Mordechai Green expresses astonishment at the
way the police is conducting its investigation of Atty. Amnon
De Hartoch, who admitted that he slapped MK Rabbi Yaakov
Cohen in a corridor of the Knesset building two months
ago.
Maalot, a development and training center in Beitar Illit and
a part of the Malam Group, is expanding. Twenty programmers
from the city will participate in the next course, after
which they will join the 30 women from Beitar already working
at the company, which outsources software development and
testing.

Sunday, 4 Tishrei (Sept. 16) is Tzom Gedalyahu
(nidcheh) on which we fast in memory of the killing of
Gedalya ben Achikom who Nevuchadnezer appointed to protect
the Jews after the destruction of the first Beis
HaMikdosh.
The custom is to make kaporos during the Aseres
Yemei Teshuvah. "It is proper for every male to try to
obtain an aliyah during these days. Even where the
aliyos are sold one should buy them according to one's
capability. On the contrary, it is more advantageous to pay
for a mitzvah than to receive it for free" (Mateh
Avrohom cited in Mishnah Berurah 584:8).
It is a mitzvah to eat on Erev Yom Kippur.
Yom Kippur falls on Shabbos, 10 Tishrei (Sept.22).
On Yom Kippur one is prohibited in all the five
inuyim.
Kiddush Levonoh is recited on Motzei Yom Kippur
(for those who do not follow the Gaon's ruling to recite
Kiddush Levonoh during the Aseres Yemei
Teshuvah).
The minhag is to start building a succah on
Motzei Yom Kippur.
