Despite coalition opposition, the Knesset House Committee and
Constitution Committee have decided to discuss the issue of
fair representation for chareidim on the boards of directors'
of government and municipal companies.
Last week the Constitution Committee held a meeting on fair
representation for Arabs in government and municipal
companies. MK Rabbi Gafni demanded to include the question of
chareidi representation, but MK Avsholom Vilan (Meretz)
objected, claiming that it could not be done according to
regulations.
Rabbi Gafni contacted the House Committee, asking it to state
that bringing chareidim into the discussion of fair
representation does not contradict regulations. Coalition
members on the committee made every effort to block the
request, but Rabbi Gafni along with Likud Chairman MK Gidon
Saar, enlisted opposition members to pass a decision against
the coalition stance.
At the end of the discussion the opposition's stance
prevailed and the committee agreed that the Constitution
Committee must include the issue of chareidi representation
in the discussion.
Later a request to revise the House Committee decision was
also rejected in a majority vote against the government's
position.
