Young Jew in Sarcelles Fears Reprisal After Attacker Killed by Policeman

By Arnon Yaffeh, Paris

The Jewish neighborhoods of Sarcelles north of Paris were placed on alert by the Mayor based on information that members of the right-wing organization Boulogne Boys were headed to the town to exact revenge against Jews after a policeman killed one of their members while saving the life of a young Jew from a mob late last week. Since the incident Yaniv Hazout has not stepped out of his house, which is surrounded by police cars and reporters.

Last Thursday a band of hooligans, some sporting tattoos and skinheads, nearly lynched the young man in the Park de France following a soccer match between a Tel Aviv team and a Paris team. They were voicing antisemitic and anti-black remarks. Had it not been for Antoine Granomort, a dark-skinned, plainclothes policeman from the Antilles Islands who shot one of the attackers because he also felt threatened, French Jews would be mourning another victim of antisemitism.

The Attorney General said the policeman tried to fend off the mob, but was knocked down and had bottles thrown at him. While still on the ground he had to shoot to death one attacker and injure another.
