HaRav Meir Bograd zt"l

HaRav Meir Bograd zt"l, one of Jerusalem's leading rabbonim who served for decades as the rov of beis knesset Har Tzvi in Kerem Avrohom, passed away at the age of 75. Gedolei Yisroel, roshei yeshivos, rabbonim and numerous Jerusalem residents took part in the late-night levaya last Thursday 3 Kislev.

Yosef Bograd was born in 5692 (1932) in Mishmar HaYarden in the Upper Galilee to Rav Chaim Aharon, who worked there as a shochet. At the tender age of nine the talented boy was sent to Yeshivas Tiferes Yisroel in Haifa, returning home to visit his parents only twice a year — Pesach and Succos. While still young he transferred to Yeshivas Slobodka, where he formed a close bond with HaRav Izak Scherr. A few years later he transferred to Yeshivas Chevron in Jerusalem.

He married the daughter of HaRav Yitzchok Eliezer Shub, a prominent talmid chochom in Jerusalem. Shortly after the wedding he received semichoh from HaRav Eliyohu Ram, who said, "R' Yosef knows Yoreh De'ah better than I do."

A few years later he was named rov of Kerem Avrohom, a neighborhood full of talmudei chachomim and anshei maaseh, and was also asked to serve as rov of beis knesses Har Tzvi, which had just been completed at the time.

He always received all comers graciously at his home on Rechov Tzefania. For over four decades he gave a Daf Yomi shiur attended by avreichim and baalei batim alike. The shiur continued until he fell ill two weeks before his petiroh.

HaRav Meir Bograd zt"l is survived by his wife, his sons, HaRav Ephraim, HaRav Yaakov Zundel, HaRav Yehoshua Pesach, and HaRav Eliyohu, and his daughters, who are married to HaRav Avrohom Tzvi Yisroelson and HaRav Ben Tzion Klein.
