Knesset Finance Committee to Address Discrimination
Against Yeshiva and Seminary Students

The Knesset Finance Committee is scheduled to hold a special
meeting to address discrimination against yeshiva and
seminary students by the Transportation Ministry, Egged and
Dan for not allowing them to purchase six-month and one-year
student bus passes at a 60 percent discount.
A pilot project in Jerusalem, Haifa and Tel Aviv provides
university students substantial discounts of up to 60 percent
on bus rides in the three large cities and their environs.
Meanwhile yeshiva, kollel and seminary students, who often
use public transportation on a daily basis, must pay full
fare.
In Jerusalem alone the majority of bus passengers are
chareidim who spend hundreds of millions of shekels per year
on fares — money that goes to the public transportation
companies and the State.
Following reports of the discrimination MK Rabbi Moshe Gafni,
asked MK Moshe Kahlon, chairman of the Knesset Finance
Committee, to hold an urgent committee meeting to assess the
issue, in which areas the project is being conducted and
which segments of the population benefit.
