One-Day Dust Storm Hits Israel
By G. Lazer
A dust storm struck Israel Monday, spreading particles that
penetrate deep into the respiratory tract. Dr. Levana Cordova-
Bijoner, head of the Environmental Ministry's National Air
Quality Monitoring Center, warned that the storm raises the
risk among people with respiratory problems and noted an
increase in the number of hospitalizations due to heart and
lung diseases and asthma attacks.
On Monday high levels of air pollutants were recorded around
the country as a result of a hot and dry depression that
arrived in Israel, bringing with it a dust storm from the
Sahara Desert. At several locations extremely high dust
levels of 10-15 times above average were recorded. In the
afternoon the concentration of particles in the air began to
drop and the dust storm passed.
