Volunteers at Public Institutions Eligible for Reimbursements

By Eliezer Rauchberger

The Knesset Finance Committee unanimously passed the Finance Ministry's request to facilitate the integration of thousands of volunteers at various public institutions by making them eligible to receive reimbursements for transportation costs, refreshments and phone calls.

According to the committee decision volunteers will be able to receive up to NIS 280 ($65) per month for fuel or unlimited reimbursements for bus fare.

Volunteers will also receive a sum of NIS 50 ($12) per month for phone calls made from their home and NIS 12 ($3) per person for refreshments at every event held. None of these reimbursements will be considered taxable income, however the volunteer must not receive any income from the institution, whether direct or indirect, or any other type of compensatory benefits.

The decision applies to all volunteers at hospitals, Magen David Adom and other public organizations.
