Cabinet Approves New Chareidi Town in South
By Tzvi Sofer
At this week's cabinet meeting the government approved the
formation of a new chareidi town in the Negev as part of the
Gvuros HaNegev project, founded by the rosh yeshiva of
Yeshivas HaNegev, HaRav Yissochor Meir, to make the desert of
Southern Israel bloom spiritually.
For the past four months government ministries have been
working on preliminary plans to start a new town in the South
as part of the Gvuros HaNegev plan, which is slated to bring
yeshivas and Torah-based communities to the region. Heading
the project is Rabbi Moshe Leibowitz, the founding mayor of
Beitar Illit, who enjoys blessings and encouragement from
gedolei Yisroel shlita.
The new city, to be located between Be'er Sheva and Arad, is
expected to include 20,000 low-cost housing units and the
Housing Ministry plans to accelerate bureaucratic procedures
to allow construction to get underway as soon as possible.
The proposed town will bear the name Kassif.
