Tiberius Gets its First Degel HaTorah Councilman
By Y. Ariel
Rabbi David Ohana, Degel HaTorah chairman in Tiberius, took
his post on the city council last week based on a rotation
agreement with Shas. Degel HaTorah Secretary MK Rabbi Moshe
Gafni offered his blessings of success to the incoming
representative, who is among the party's important young
members.
Running together, Degel HaTorah and Shas received two seats
on the Tiberius city council. Shas representatives Rabbi
Eliyahu Zigdon and Rabbi Levy Ben Abu took their posts based
on a rotation agreement with local Degel HaTorah chairman and
religious council member Rabbi Ohana, who has worked in close
cooperation to promote the city's burgeoning religious
institutes.
Although a similar rotation agreement was made in Afula, Shas
has not upheld the agreement made to give Degel HaTorah's
Rabbi Menachem Gold a seat on the city council there. "It is
inconceivable to avoid honoring a signed agreement and
unreasonable for us to have to wage a long, ongoing battle
over it," said Rabbi Gafni. "Agreements must be honored."
