Tzfat Sidewalk Sinks, Revealing Remnants of Old
Neighborhood
By Yechiel Sever
Following the harsh winter weather in the North, two holes
formed in the sidewalks of Tzfat, revealing remnants of homes
destroyed in the earthquake that struck the city in 5697
(1937). The street had to be closed to vehicle traffic, and
even pedestrian traffic was restricted near the site.
The gaping holes caused extensive indirect damage to the
adjacent businesses since locals and tourists are now afraid
to walk by, fearing that another section of the sidewalk
could sink. One local business owner told reporters the holes
were several meters deep in some places. "Businesses were
harmed significantly because they are now almost
inaccessible," he said. "The municipality says the closure
will last for over ten days, and for us this is enormous
economic damage. In my case the losses come to over NIS
15,000 ($3,500). I received negligible compensations for the
war and now another serious blow has landed on the business
owners. Before long businesses here will start to fold."
