New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg Volunteers at Yad
Sarah
By Yechiel Sever
During his short stay in Eretz Yisroel recently, New York
Mayor Michael Bloomberg found time, together with his host
and colleague Jerusalem Mayor Rabbi Uri Lupoliansky, to visit
Yad Sarah, where the two leaders volunteered to assemble an
aluminum walker. Onlookers noted the billionaire mayor's high
level of "proficiency" in inserting the screws and handling
tools.
Bloomberg was accompanied by a large entourage, and during
his walk through the corridors of the building he said he was
very impressed by the many services available through Yad
Sarah, as well as its international activity. Today the
organization has over 6,000 volunteers working at over 100
branches around the country. During the past year Yad Sarah
provided assistance to 380,000 people.
Last week other public figures also paid visits, including
Minister of Pensioners Affairs Rafi Eitan, Welfare Ministry
Director General Moshe Sion and Mrs. Ruth Akinil Tuju, wife
of the Foreign Minister of Kenya. Each of these visits was
conducted separately.
The visit by the wife of the Kenyan Foreign Minister was
intended to show her the services available through Yad Sarah
and to serve as a preliminary assessment of the viability of
setting up a similar organization in Kenya. The visit was
initiated by the Foreign Ministry and the guest was
accompanied by Meir Handelsman, director of professional
foreign liaison.
