First Arab Nomination for Righteous Gentiles
Recognition
by Yated Ne'eman Staff
Of the 21,000 people who were recognized by official
institutions for saving Jews during the Holocaust, only 60
were Muslims, mostly from Bosnia and Albania, and not a
single Arab. Dr. Robert Satloff, director of the Washington
Institute for Near East Policy, researched the topic and
wants to correct this mistaken impression.
For the first time an Arab has been nominated as a candidate
for recognition among the Righteous Among the Nations. Khaled
Abdelwahhab, a wealthy Tunisian farmer who died in 1997,
saved a family of 24 by hiding them on his farm.
The nomination was made possible after one of the survivors,
73-year-old Annie Boucheres, was located in the US, and gave
a detailed testimonial just weeks before she passed away.
