Ancient Czech Cemetery Vandalized

by Yated Ne'eman Staff

Unidentified figures desecrated an ancient Jewish cemetery in the city of Pisek, 100 km (60 miles) south of Prague. The local police have opened an investigation.

According to Czech Police Spokeswoman Hana Moltasova, 23 gravestones were overturned and five others were shattered. No longer used for burial, the 19th-century cemetery was closed for years until 1993, when it was opened to the public following extensive renovation work at the site.

This was the second incident of vandalism at a Jewish cemetery in the Czech Republic in less than two weeks' time. During the Nine Days vandals desecrated a Jewish cemetery in the town of Bohumin in the northeast of the country. The cemetery, also no longer in use, was opened to the public one month ago following renovation work.
