Thousands of stunned Bnei Brak residents headed by roshei
yeshivos, dayonim and rabbonim took part in the
levaya of Menachem Shlomo Shapira z"l, a
yeshiva student who passed away tragically at the age of 15
on Erev Shabbos Nachamu due to dehydration during a hike in
Nachal Amud between Tzfat and Meron.
Menachem Shlomo Shapira was born on 6 Teves 5752 to HaRav
Avrohom Shapira, rov of Chanichei Hayeshivos in Elad and rosh
yeshiva of Yeshivas Tiferes Moshe, and his mother Pessiyoh,
the daughter of HaRav Tuviyoh Abramovitz.
His parents raised him to become a genuine ben Torah,
enrolling him at Talmud Torah Mishkenos Yaakov. Later he
studied at Yeshivas Ponovezh Letzei'irim, where he was a top
student and a ben aliyoh. His rabbonim referred to the
niftar as a mevakesh Hashem. Since his bar
mitzvah he would always leave some food uneaten, based on the
writings of Rabbenu Yonah, who cites the Ravad that if one
leaves over some food it is considered like a full fast.
On Friday, Erev Shabbos Nachamu, he set out with a few
friends for a trip in the North, planning to spend Shabbos in
Meron. During a hike in Nachal Amud he collapsed after
suffering from dehydration and all efforts to revive him
failed.
He is survived by his parents, siblings and hundreds of
friends mourning the histalkus of a ben aliyoh
at the height of his spiritual growth.
