Geneva Shul Destroyed by Fire, Possibility of Arson Under
Investigation

Major damage was caused to Beit Knesset Heichal Haness in
Geneva's Malanave neighborhood in the early morning hours of
the second day of Shavuos. Dozens of firefighters were needed
to extinguish the blaze and police said arson could be the
cause since the fire broke out in several places. The fire
may also have been due to an electrical problem.
Nobody was injured but the interior was completely destroyed,
the front was charred and most of the windows shattered due
to the extreme heat. Firefighters assisted local Jews in
gathering the tashmishei kedushoh and sifrei
Torah remaining in the shul. The congregants were forced
to daven Shacharis outside at an adjacent park.
If the fire was indeed an antisemitic attack it would be a
very rare incident in Switzerland, which has a reputation for
strictly maintaining law and order.
