Dozens of National-Religious Rabbis Went Up to Har Habayis

By Betzalel Kahn

Dozens of national-religious rabbis went up to Har Habayis on Sunday despite the well-known halochoh passed down to us that entering the area of Har Habayis is strictly prohibited today because nobody is free of tumoh. Gedolei haposkim zt"l veylct"a agree treading on the area is an issur koreis.

According to a report in Ha'aretz the Zionist rabbis — including Rabbi Dov Lior, head of the Rabbinical Committee of Judea and Samaria, Rabbi Avi Gisser, the rabbi of Ofrah, Rabbi Yaakov Meidan, head of Yeshivat Har Etzion, and Rabbi Aharon Harel — spent two hours at the site. The visit was coordinated with the Waqf and Israel Police.

The incident took place after three of the rabbis issued a proclamation permitting entry to Har Habayis, including two Bnei Akiva heads, Rabbis Chaim Druckman and Avraham Tzukerman, and the rabbi of Kiryat Shemoneh, Rabbi Tzefania Drori. In addition, the rabbi of Ramat Gan, Rabbi Yaakov Ariel, recently issued another notice permitting entry to Har Habayis based on illegitimate halachic arguments.

Until recently, due to fears of religious uprisings in the region the Israeli government denied Jews entry to Har Habayis since Israel regained control of the Old City in the Six-Day War, making use of the ban issued by gedolei haposkim and the Chief Rabbinate. But now that Zionist rabbis are challenging the foundations of the halochoh there are serious concerns many Jews will transgress an issur koreis by visiting the site of the Temple in a state of tumoh.
