New Eruv in Jerusalem's Kiryat Yovel Neighborhood — Becoming Chareidi

By Betzalel Kahn

The construction of a new eruv in the main part of Jerusalem's Kiryat Yovel neighborhood is now complete.

The need for the eruv, funded by R' Refoel Halperin, arose when more than 100 bnei Torah families, especially young couples, moved into a central section of Kiryat Yovel, where Torah activity is growing. The new eruv will connect to the Bayit Vegan eruv.

R' Halperin was asked to provide assistance in covering the construction costs for the eruv, which were high due to the many halachic hiddurim and difficult field conditions. R' Halperin agreed to pay all of the expenses and oversaw the progress to insure that the project was completed by the end of winter. He also donated a modern loudspeaker system to announce candlelighting times in Kiryat Yovel.

The eruv construction was overseen by rabbonim from Bayit Vegan and will be maintained by the Eida Chareidis of Jerusalem. The upper portion of central Kiryat Yovel is also included in the eruv. In routing the eruv planners took into account other parts of Kiryat Yovel that are becoming more and more chareidi.

The new eruv will connect to the Bayit Vegan eruv via Rechov Torah Ve'avodah and will extend the section of the eruv running along Sderot Herzl. Rabbonim issued instructions to build this section as a separate addition, since the possibility Sderot Herzl constitutes a reshus horabim deOraisa is greater than in the case of the streets inside Bayit Vegan and Kiryat Yovel.
