Bnei Brak Drivers Pledge to Drive Safely

by Yated Ne'eman Staff

An organization called VeNishmartem successfully completed a campaign to have hundreds in Bnei Brak sign a pledge to follow all traffic regulations. The drivers wrote their name, address and phone number and signed a pledge reading, "I hereby pledge to drive carefully and follow traffic regulations." They also received a bumper sticker with the words, "Sa kechok — zeh lo tzechok."

Thousands of drivers have signed similar pledges over the past year and a half in Bnei Brak and Jerusalem. R' Aharon Feinhandler, chairman of VeNishmartem, says the campaign is particularly important in advance of the summer break, when studies show a rise in traffic accident injuries and deaths, with more children in the street. "When a driver makes a pledge and gives his name, address and phone number, there is a chance he will keep his word," he explains.

Past signers say they began to drive slower in residential neighborhoods and in some cases avoided hitting children who suddenly appeared in the street.
