At the initiative of leading educators in Jerusalem's
chareidi neighborhoods, the Achsania Shel Torah committee has
been set up to arrange housing for yeshiva students—
especially bochurim from abroad—who come to
Jerusalem to study at the city's holy yeshivas. The committee
has received warm blessings and encouragement from roshei
yeshivos and rabbonim. HaRav Nosson Tzvi Finkel praised the
initiative and said it promises to bring great success in
both ruchniyus and gashmiyus.
The committee began its activities in Beit Yisroel, Meah
Shearim, Shmuel Hanovi and Geulah, neighborhoods where
housing solutions are in high demand due to the lack of dorm
space at the yeshivas in the area. Students at yeshivas
located in other parts of the city can also make use of the
committee's services.
Headed by avreichim and yeshiva representatives, the
committee will locate suitable apartments, conduct
negotiations with landlords and renters and accompany the
rental process from beginning to end. The committee will also
perform necessary maintenance to help bochurim
learning Torah far from home.
Committee representatives will ensure both tenants and
landlords meet the rental terms. Achsania Shel Torah will
verify that the lodgings present no spiritual challenges,
verify that only students authorized by the respective
yeshivas rent the apartments and will oversee the tenants'
conduct, explaining to them the importance of maintaining
good relations with the neighbors and not causing
disturbances. An announcement regarding the new arrangement
has been sent among area residents and yeshiva students as
well as other bochurim planning to come to Jerusalem
in the near future.
