HaRav Lefkowitz Warns Bnei Torah to Keep Cell Phones Off
While Learning
By Betzalel Kahn
HaRav Michel Yehuda Lefkowitz issued strident remarks on the
terrible stumbling block cell phones pose, saying even kosher
models constitute a breech of the bnei Torah camp when
kept on during study sessions, inviting interruptions.
During a talk at the conclusion of the Kelovi Yokum and
Mishnas Osher bein hazmanim yeshivas in Jerusalem's
Ramot Alef neighborhood, HaRav Lefkowitz cited the verse,
`Vehoyoh machanecho kodosh velo yeiro'eh becho ervas dovor
veshov mei'acharecho' (Devorim 23:15), saying, "The worst
possible situation is if chas vesholom Hashem `turns
away' from us. The people who invented cell phones destroyed
all of the kedushoh. They wrought destruction and
introduced all of the breeches to the point of really
changing people and have caused broken families and broken
individuals who can no longer save themselves. They are
crying out for help and nobody can save them."
Speaking to hundreds of Ramot residents HaRav Lefkowitz
added, "Only through omol haTorah and yegi'as
haTorah can one be spared. Cell phones should not be in
your possession while learning, not even kosher devices."
Several weeks ago HaRav Yosef Chaim Kopshitz visited Maran
HaRav Eliashiv shlita, raising the issue of old cell
phones without kosher certification but which do not support
unsuitable contents. Maran said using such a phone is clearly
an act of chilul Hashem and those who use them
undermine the campaign since people who see them are liable
to permit themselves to use non-kosher models that do support
such contents.
