Maranan Verabonon Warn Against Government Attempt to Force Third Year at Women's Seminaries

by Betzalel Kahn

Maran HaRav Yosef Sholom Eliashiv, HaRav Aharon Leib Shteinman and HaRav Michel Yehuda Lefkowitz shlita issued a special notice warning against an attempt by the Education Ministry to force seminaries to add a third year of studies and academic coursework for teachers-in-training. Based on their demand, the Education Ministry has withheld funds from the seminaries.

The budget agreement signed with UTJ at the beginning of the current government a few months ago, included a decision to earmark tens of millions of shekels in budget funds for seminaries. Recently it was learned that the Education Ministry is making the transfer of this funding contingent on committing to add a third year to seminary study programs, although gedolei Yisroel were reluctant to allow even a second year and are adamantly opposed to a third year. MK Rabbi Moshe Gafni was told not to have funds transferred until the Education Ministry order was changed and to launch a campaign against the decree.

In light of the Education Ministry's latest attempts to interfere with study arrangements at the seminaries, principals were given clear instructions not to accept any funding with this stipulation attached to it.
