Bill to Prevent Fake Sifrei Torah and Megillos

By Eliezer Rauchberger

The Knesset Interior Committee passed a motion to send for its second and third readings a bill to prevent the sale or distribution of phony sifrei Torah, and megillos presented as kosher.

Meir Shpeigler, representing the Prime Minister's Office, said the government welcomes and supports the bill. Chief Rabbinate Attorney Shimon Ulman also praised the bill but claimed that at present the Rabbinate has no means of enforcing such a law as well as the law already on the books against tefillin and mezuzoh fraud. The bill's sponsor, MK Rabbi Moshe Gafni, stressed the need for the bill in light of the fact sifrei Torah and megillos are not included in the law against tefillin and mezuzoh fraud.
