French Hill Park-and-Ride Project Commissioned
By S. Fried
The Jerusalem Region Planning and Construction Committee
granted approval for a park-and-ride project at French Hill.
According to the preliminary plan a 730-space parking lot
would be built alongside a large light-rail station at the
main junction above the ridgeline leading toward Ramot. Part
of the parking lot would be underground while the rest would
blend in with the landscape of the ridge above Nachal Tzofim,
with numerous trees planted to complement the natural
vegetation in the area.
The parking lot would allow residents of Jerusalem's northern
neighborhoods and drivers arriving from Tel Aviv and the
coastal plain via Hwy 443 and Hwy 9 (under construction) to
park and then take the train into the city.
According to the initial layout of the light-rail tracks,
park-and-ride lots will also be built at Mt. Herzl,
Ammunition Hill and between Pisgat Ze'ev and Shuafat.
The new parking lot will include elevators to take passengers
from the parking levels to the area near the light-rail
platform. Users will pay for parking and train fare using a
smart card.
