Renewal Work Complete on North Wall of Western Wall Plaza
By Betzalel Kahn
Renewal work on the wall of the Machkemoh Building, located
to the left of the men's section at the Kosel Maarovi, is now
complete. After rocks began to fall from the wall and paint
chips fell on visitors last year building engineers found the
wall unsound.
Scaffolding was erected along the length of the wall by the
Western Wall Heritage Foundation and in cooperation with the
Antiquities Authority general renovation work was performed
on the wall. The entire wall was repainted and the rocks that
had crumbled were replaced, while other rocks were restored.
The four-month project cost NIS 500,000 ($115,000).
HaRav Shmuel Rabinovitz, the rov of the Kosel Maarovi, says
renovation work was only done on the Machkemoh Wall and not
on the original rocks of the Kosel, therefore no halachic
restrictions applied in this case.
