MK Rabbi Ravitz: Increase in Youth Crime is the Result of
Failed Education
By Eliezer Rauchberger
The sharp rise in crime and violence stem from a warped
education system that totally overlooks yiras Shomayim
said MK Rabbi Avrohom Ravitz during a speech before the
Knesset plenum addressing the issue of the increase in crime.
Rabbi Ravitz asked Tommy Lapid and other MKs from Shinui,
which had raised the issue onto the agenda, what they intend
to do to halt crime. "We know that `Im ein yiras Elokim
bamokom hazeh vaharoguni.' Kill me over a glass of beer;
kill me over a parking space. If there is no Elokim in
a place, I will kill because of anger, because of pride,
because of envy. If there is no education to [teach] what is
Above you, this is the outcome."
When MK Shalgi of Shinui claimed "law and democracy" are of
supreme importance to him, Rabbi Ravitz retorted that in
Israel we live under a system of law and democracy, yet crime
is growing from day to day. "Where have your law and
democracy led society?" he asked.
"The real question is where does one stand as an individual?
Does he know to stand up against what is taking place? Is
there something Above you? If you say that you alone exist
then you might have thousands of laws and several
constitutions, but this is still the result. Increased crime.
And this is the social condition in Israel today, for there
is no Elokim above you, chas vecholiloh, and
without this it is impossible to escape from all of the
maladies and misfortunes of Israeli society," concluded Rabbi
Ravitz.
