Manchester Prepares for Central Shas Siyum

by Yated Ne'eman Staff

The Manchester kehilloh is eagerly awaiting the central event to mark the Siyum HaShas for participants at the Daf Yomi Beis Medrash, headed by HaRav Simchah Chaim Bamberger.

Manchester has gained renown for the Daf Yomi Beis Medrash, started 30 years ago by the rosh yeshiva of Yeshivas Manchester, HaRav Yehuda Segal zt"l, who worked to set up a framework of Daf Yomi shiurim that would stand as a central institution of its own, appointing as its head HaRav Simchah Chaim Bamberger, one of Europe's prominent rabbonim, who delivers all of the shiurim. Three shiurim are held every day, including an early-morning shiur held in the large hall of Machzikei Hadas, the chareidi community's central beis knesses, and a night shiur held at Beis Knesses Kahal Adas Yeshurun.

The main shiur, one of the world's largest Daf Yomi shiurim, takes place in the afternoon. The daf is related—with fabulous clarity and the addition of various chiddushim and explanations—to an audience of rabbonim and avreichim talmidei chachomim alongside baalei batim, young and old alike.

Beis Medrash Daf HaYomi is not large enough to accommodate the numerous participants in the shiur, but now plans have been made to build a new beis medrash and the groundbreaking is slated to take place in the near future.

In addition to the Agudas Yisroel event in London to mark the Siyum HaShas, Manchester residents are making arrangements to host one of England's largest events in honor of the occasion.

Longstanding shiur participants who are about to have the privilege of completing the fourth cycle at the Beis Medrash Daf HaYomi are awaiting the date with even greater expectancy and joy. The present cycle also began with a large event attended by thousands and featuring a speech by HaRav Shimshon Pincus, zt"l.

During his last visit to Eretz Yisroel, HaRav Bamberger spoke with Maran HaRav Eliashiv, who gave his warm blessings for the siyum and even sent a letter of congratulations to mark the event.

He also received blessings from HaRav Aharon Yehuda Leib Shteinman, HaRav Michel Yehuda Lefkowitz, HaRav Shmuel Halevy Wosner and HaRav Chaim Kanievsky, as well as a blessing from his friend, HaRav Yitzchok Tuvioh Weiss, av beis din of the Eida Chareidis of Jerusalem.

The siyum is scheduled to take place in Manchester on Sunday, 18 Adar Alef (February 27). The entire kehilloh — one of Europe's largest Torah communities — will be on hand, besiyato deShmaya, for a lavish event to honor the Torah. The event will be graced with the presence of all of Manchester's roshei yeshivos and rabbonim, as well as the av beis din of Machzikei Hadas, HaRav Menachem Mendel Shneibalg, and prominent rabbonim from London and Gateshead. Speakers will include HaRav Moshe Tuvioh Leff, rov and av beis din in Minneapolis, who will be making a special trip to participate in the siyum. A delegation from Eretz Yisroel headed by roshei yeshivos is also slated to participate in the event.

The members of the shiur have produced a special booklet to be handed out in honor of the siyum, be'ezras Hashem, which is being eagerly anticipated in the hopes even more participants will join the shiur to extend the bounds of Torah far and wide.
