Gravestones Smashed in London Cemetery
By Y. Ariel
Degel HaTorah representatives in Netanya are notching up
another achievement after the local planning and construction
committee approved a request by Kanyon HaSharon (Sharon Mall)
to carry out internal changes on condition that the coffee
shop operating on the premises does not open its doors on
Shabbos. "This is a positive precedent in accordance with the
wishes of the majority of city residents who keep Shabbos,"
says Rabbi Moshe Lachover, chairman of Degel HaTorah of
Netanya.
Not long ago Kanyon HaSharon sought approval for the
construction of a building extension that would serve as an
open balcony for a new coffee shop operating there. When the
request came before the planning and construction committee
Rabbi Lachover objected, saying that the entire shopping mall
facility was only approved for construction as a closed
structure. The sight of an open balcony extending out would
be detrimental to passersby because of the highly visible
chilul Shabbos that would take place at the
establishment.
Following a prolonged battle Rabbi Lachover's objection was
accepted and the coffee shop promised to remain closed on
Shabbos. "I am pleased over the success in expressing through
this decision the desire . . . of the majority of Netanya
residents who want to preserve the honor of Shabbos," said
Rabbi Lachover.
