Bnei Brak's population passed the 150,000 mark for the first
time. According to figures collected by the Interior
Ministry's Population Registry the city has 150,289 residents
kein yirbu.
In contrast to various statistics and research institutes the
most up-to-date and reliable figure is generated by the
Population Registry through its Maarechet Meimad 2000
program, which immediately records in- and out-migration as
well as births and deaths in every location. The latest
figure released for Bnei Brak is for 8 Iyar 5765.
According to Interior Ministry figures the number of Bnei
Brak residents is rising steadily despite the lack of
available land. The city was planned to accommodate 10,000
residents when it was built 80 years ago.
On 18 Adar 5764 the population came to 148,306.
The age breakdown is as follows: 0-9, 21.1%; 10-19, 19.7%; 20-
29, 16.7%; 30-39, 10.1%; 40-49, 8.4%; 50-59, 8.8%; 60-69,
4.4%; 70-79, 3.6%; 80-89, 2.3%; 90 and over, 0.9%.
The City's Department of Education also shows an increase of
200 children in the number of kindergarten enrollments,
necessitating the opening of six new kindergarten classes to
be operated by the city or by another public body.
The increase in the number of city residents stems from
births and the arrival of residents from other cities,
including 700 from Jerusalem according to the Central Bureau
for Statistics.
Bnei Brak is a magnet for the chareidi sector around the
country due to its yeshivas and other superb educational
institutions, its large and varied employment and commercial
opportunities and its geographical location in Gush Dan. In
addition government incentives to purchase apartments in
outlying towns have dwindled to a minimum.
