Good Morning
by Drora Matlofsky

BODY: Aaahhh... I don't want to get up. It's too comfy under the blankets. And what is there to get up to, anyway?

NESHAMA: I don't want to get up, either. I am so much happier and at peace in that other world.

BODY: You see, we agree. So let's go back to sleep.

NESHAMA: I think I could... But I wouldn't be well received. I would be made to understand that my duty is down here.

BODY: Duty, duty... Each time you say that word, it means I'm going to suffer.

NESHAMA: Don't exaggerate. Sometimes it has been quite the opposite.

BODY: Not often enough. And even then, it's `Don't eat this, it's not healthy.' `Walk. Don't take a bus.'

NESHAMA: I also remember saying: Take the bus, don't walk.

BODY: Thanks.

NESHAMA: We are supposed to work as a team, so stop being selfish and ungrateful. We, together, are a person. Without me, you're nothing.

BODY: Without you, I can sleep.

NESHAMA: What would you gain by sleeping?

BODY: Why do I have to gain anything? By sleeping, I gain sleep, and that's all I'm interested in right now. When I'm ready for something else, I'll let you know.

NESHAMA: Like food?

BODY: Yeah, but I'm not hungry now.

NESHAMA: How about a cup of coffee?

BODY: Mmmm... Not bad. But I don't feel like getting up and preparing it.

NESHAMA: Yes, but you know, once you have it, you'll be happy.

BODY: So what? I'm happy sleeping.

NESHAMA: You're not happy. You're nonexistent. Anyway, I can't sleep any more, even though I'd love to.

BODY: Don't be silly. I'm not nonexistent.

NESHAMA: O.K. then you're non-human.

BODY: Don't care. Leave me alone.

NESHAMA: But I can't. I've got things to do in the world and I can't do them without you.

BODY: Oh, all right. Isn't it hard when you're indispensible? But only if you let me have a cup of coffee.

NESHAMA: All right. Isn't it hard when your body thinks a cup of coffee is indispensible?
