Matnas Chaim (the Gift Of Life) on the 48 Ways to Acquire Torah
by the Mashgiach Rabbi Mattisyahu Solomon
Reviewed by Yated Ne'eman Staff

A beacon of Torah inspiration was brought to Klal Yisroel with the appearance of the most recent offering of the world famous mashgiach, HaRav Mattisyahu Solomon, currently mashgiach of Lakewood Yeshiva.

The book (volume 1) represents a series of mussar discourses delivered by the author over a number of years as mashgiach of the Gateshead Yeshiva. The talks explain and illuminate the mishna in the sixth perek of Pirkei Ovos -- the 48 methods necessary to acquire the Torah.

The lectures are not merely interesting thoughts on the 48 methods. Rather they represent a clear-cut, fundamental and practical, step-by-step instruction about how one goes about climbing the eternal ladder of Torah greatness.

No effort was spared in gathering the Torah concepts that were expressed in his talks over the years, and in transcribing them into a clear concise style, befitting all.

The great mussar dean, Rabbi Simcha Zissel of Kelm, wrote that one should utilize the time between Pesach and Shavuos to procure one of the 48 methods each day. However, the sefer will certainly serve as a most useful tool the entire year. Those who desire to advance will find the volume a beneficial "road map" leading to Torah prominence.
