The European Union Invited the Heads of the CER to
Discussions about Antisemitism
by Yated Ne'eman Staff
Romano Prodi, President of the European Commission, has
invited the heads of the Conference of European Rabbis (CER)
for a meeting to discuss current antisemitism in Europe. The
topic will be "Europe Against Antisemitism," and it is
scheduled to take place this Thursday in the European
Commission's building in Brussels. Two years ago the European
Commission invited the CER to hold its 23rd convention at the
building in Brussels.
President Prodi told Rabbi Abba Dunner, secretary of the CER,
that many states of the European Union are very concerned
about rising antisemitism, and he feels that he should
consult with the rabbonim about what to do, and take the
opportunity to express his deep concern about the phenomenon.
The European Commission will be represented by German Foreign
Minister Joschka Fisher, Irish Foreign Minister Brian Cowen,
and other senior diplomats.
The CER will be represented by its standing committee,
including HaRav Yosef Chaim Citruk, the Chief Rabbi of
France, HaRav Pinchas Goldschmidt, the Chief Rabbi of Moscow,
Rabbi Abba Dunner, secretary of the CER, and by Rabbi Moshe
Rose, director of the CER.
Also participating in the discussions will be Dr Israel
Singer and Mr Izzy Leibler of the World Jewish Congress, Mr
Kobi Benatoff, President of the European Jewish Congress, the
head of the Anti Defamation League in America and others.
