Sharon Visits Russia for the Third Time
by M Plaut and Yated Ne'eman Staff

On his third visit to Russia since he became prime minister less than three years ago, Ariel Sharon pressed Israel's case on several issues that are important to Israel in which Russia is involved. Sharon made the trip despite the fact that a general strike was scheduled by the Histadrut in those days.

Israel Submits a UN Resolution
by Yated Ne'eman Staff

Even though it is the most popular subject of resolutions in the United Nations General Assembly, Israel has never tried submitting a resolution of its own. Now it has.

Shaarei Torah 25th Anniversary Dinner
by D. Saks

A large gathering of well-wishers, including many of the city's leading rabbonim and benefactors, were in attendance at the 25th anniversary dinner for Shaarei Torah school in Johannesburg last week. The theme of the evening was the celebration of a quarter of a century of excellence in Jewish education by Shaarei Torah, which has been one of the mainstays of Torah chinuch catering for the Johannesburg chareidi community since its inception.

Observations: Secondhand Smoking
by Yated Ne'eman Staff

The citizens of Helena, Montana, a relatively small town of about 66,000 in the north of the United States, voted in June 2002 to ban smoking in all public buildings -- including restaurants, bars and casinos. Soon after, doctors at the local hospital noticed that heart-attack admissions were dropping.

OPINION & COMMENT

European Antisemitism

Europeans believe that Israel is the greatest threat to world peace. A sample of the population of each of the countries in the European Union was given a list of countries and asked: "Tell me if in your opinion it presents or not a threat to peace in the world."

In Awe of HaRav Shach, zt"l

by Y. D. Halevy

This piece is in honor of the second yahrtzeit of Maran HaRav Shach, zt"l, on 16 Marcheshvon. Short, but very powerful, it certainly makes us painfully aware of what we lost.

OBSERVATIONS

HOME & FAMILY

Grandfather Avraham Aharon
from Stolin to Tel Aviv

based on an interview with Nachum Alovitch

My grandfather's name was Avraham Aharon. He was born in Stolin, a small town in White Russia, a poor country with extensive forests and gushing rivers, beautiful lakes and large swamps. Despite the great poverty and the hostility of the government, Jewish life thrived and was rich with accomplishment, culture and a love for Eretz Yisroel.
