Talmudei Torah Fight Attempts to Interfere with Chinuch
Policies
by Yated Ne'eman Staff
Following pressure and inducements aimed at the Torah-based
education system lately as part of government attempts to
interfere with study arrangements and the shaping of
education and instruction in talmudei Torah, gedolei
Yisroel, including HaRav Yosef Sholom Eliashiv,
shlita, are calling on rabbonim and public figures to
stand firm and wage a battle to safeguard the purity of Torah-
based education.
Talmudei Torah principals recently learned that
Education Ministry officials are trying to set precedents for
government involvement in the instruction of tinokos shel
beis rabbon enrolled in "exempt" institutions, meaning
the chadorim. Government figures warn in the near
future the minimal funding for exempt institutions will be
given according to the "level of service" and the "profile of
the instructors," and melamdim will be required to
obtain teaching certificates based on Education Ministry
criteria. The issue is currently under review in various
committees and forums that have been discussing reforms in
the Israeli education system for the past several years.
Maran HaRav Eliashiv told chareidi education figures last
week that several of the Torah greats of previous generations
were known to have battled against outside attempts to
interfere with the studies of children educated for Torah and
yiras Shomayim. Even when the Czar was behind coercive
measures they would not permit any outside involvement. Thus
today, when the only threat is withholding funds, resistance
is called for even more.
Rabbonim and public figures called for a determined struggle
against government schemes to undermine the foundations of
our existence, for porkei ol cannot be allowed to
dictate the nature of talmudei Torah or to certify
instructors of tinokos shel beis rabbon.
