On September 10, 2001, 4,000 Israelis were issued a secret
directive by the Mossad, warning them not to report to work
at the World Trade Center the next day. The Mossad was
working in cahoots with the Jewish owners of the World Trade
Center, who supplied the Israeli agency with the information
necessary to destroy the buildings. It was made to look like
an Arab act because the Jews have a secret plot to pit the
Arabs and Christians against each other so that the Jews can
take over the world.
This is one of the many antisemitic rumors that have
circulated since the attacks on the World Trade Center two
years ago.
A report released by the Anti-Defamation League (ADL)
catalogs the antisemitic rumors.
"The 9/11 attacks have fueled an entire new genre of
antisemitic conspiracy theories leading to an environment
where rumors about Jews are finding acceptance in the
mainstream," said Abraham H. Foxman, ADL national
director.
One of the most popular of these rumors, fueled primarily by
David Duke, the president of the European-American Unity and
Rights Organization, is that the Mossad, or what he calls
"the most ruthless terrorist organization in the entire
world," was behind the attacks.
Duke points to an article that appeared in The Washington
Times the day before the attacks, which discussed a study
that classified the Mossad as "ruthless and cunning... [it]
has the capability to target U.S. forces and make it look
like a Palestinian/Arab act." To Duke and his followers, this
was a prescient declaration of Israel's role in the September
11 attacks.
Free American Newsmagazine suggested that the United
States was working with the Mossad to destroy the towers
because US President George W. Bush wanted an excuse to
overthrow the Taliban in order to gain control of "Afghan
opium-derived heroin" trade.
Another popular conspiracy theory presented by the ADL
targets an "Israeli spy ring" which knew about the attacks in
advance and did nothing to prevent them because it did not
want to compromise its operations in the U.S. for the sake of
non-Jewish lives.
This rumor began on Fox News, according to the report, when
Carl Cameron implied that 100 Israelis who had been arrested
or detained in the months before and after the attacks and
claimed to be art students were perhaps really spies for the
Israeli government who knew about the hijackings and did
nothing to stop them.
Many theorists claim the spies were working for Israeli hi-
tech companies in America that wanted to spy on the US
government. Specifically, these companies were Comverse
Infosys, which does wiretapping, and Amdocs, which according
to the report records almost every call placed in the United
States.
The Jewish owners of the Trade Centers, Larry Silverstein of
Silverstein Properties and Frank Lowy of Westfield America,
have also been implicated by these extremist theories because
they stood to gain millions of dollars in insurance money
from the destruction of the twin towers.
The ADL refers to these conspiracy theories as the "Big Lie"
and released the report with the hope that it will raise
awareness. "Never in the history of the Jewish people has one
terrible lie about 'Jewish control' spread so quickly and
with such power," said Foxman. "As we gather to commemorate
the second anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, the Big Lie shows
no signs of diminishing."
Less than a year ago, Amiri Baraka, the African-American
former poet laureate of New Jersey, recited a poem, "Somebody
Blew Up America," which claimed not only that 4000 Israeli
workers did not report to work, but also noted that Prime
Minister Ariel Sharon stayed away from New York that day,
despite the fact that his canceled trip was scheduled for
September 23. Furthermore, says the study, the September 11
conspiracies have led antisemites worldwide to blame the Jews
for other disasters, including the Columbia shuttle crash and
the war on Iraq.
