Chareidi Education: A Majority in Beit Shemesh
by Betzalel Kahn
Chareidi education in Beit Shemesh has now become a majority
of the city's educational system. Of the 18,520
talmidim enrolled in all of the educational
institutions, about 54 percent are studying in chareidi
institutions. The rapid increase in the number of chareidi
students has made them the majority within just a few
years.
Some 10,000 children studying in 400 nursery school,
talmud Torah and school classrooms began the 5764
school year last week. This impressive achievement can be
attributed this year to the chareidi representatives on the
city council. Dozens of portable classrooms were set up
throughout the Ramat Beit Shemesh Alef neighborhood with
Education Ministry funding to provide a partial, interim
solution for the severe lack of space in educational
institutions. In addition, several new structures were opened
for use while others are still under construction.
The day after the school year opened, MK Rabbi Moshe Gafni
arrived for a tour of several educational facilities in the
city. Rabbi Gafni was accompanied by Rabbi Avrohom
Rubinstein, a city council member representing Degel HaTorah;
Rabbi Eliezer Greenbaum, director of Degel HaTorah's Public
Information Bureau who is the subject of an article in this
week's paper; Rabbi Moshe Montag, director of the Department
of Chareidi Education; Rabbi Chaim Friedman, director of the
Chareidi Section; Rabbi Shmuel Greenberg, principal of Talmud
Torah Toras HaBayis; Rabbi Tzvi Ravinsky and others.
