Interior Ministry Says 70 percent of Immigrants from
Former Soviet Union are not Jewish!
by Betzalel Kahn
According to a representative survey conducted by the
Interior Ministry, a full 70 percent of immigrants who
arrived from the former Soviet Union last year under the Law
of Return are not Jewish, compared to a figure of 50 percent
in other recent years. The figures refer to the declarations
of the immigrants themselves and do not take into account
that some of those who represent themselves as Jewish may not
be so according to halachah.

Kiruv Seminar in Kiev
by Yated Ne'eman Staff
The first-ever seminar for teachers of secular studies took
place in Puscha Voditza, a suburb of Kiev, Ukraine, last
week. The four-day seminar attracted more than fifty
participants, representing Jewish schools throughout the
country. The purpose of the conference was to give an
opportunity for these Jewish teachers to get a flavor of
Yiddishkeit. For many of the participants, it was the
first time that they had experienced a real Shabbos
atmosphere, and they responded enthusiastically.
OPINION &
COMMENT
We Must Open Our Eyes
Now, more than ever, the simple Jewish truth is very evident:
there is nothing that we can do, and even nothing that we can
imagine that anyone can do, that will conclusively resolve
the difficult situation that we are in. We have no one upon
whom to rely except our Father in Heaven.
OBSERVATIONS

Realities
by Yated Ne'eman staff
On January 1, 2002, the currencies of twelve European
countries were replaced by Euros. Banks stopped issuing
marks, lire, guilders and francs. Stores will also stop
accepting the old currencies as legal tender by the end of
next spring.
HOME & FAMILY
Can You Call Her Mama?
The Shvigger Syndrome
by A. Ross
The term `mother-in-law' or shvigger has slightly
negative connotations. Mothers-in-law have been the butt for
humorists since time immemorial and jokes, sometimes unkind,
often hilariously funny, abound in many Western cultures.
What has caused this antipathy towards someone who is, after
all, one's partner's mother? Presumably, in most cases, a son
loves his mother. He gets married and his wife does NOT love
her. Why is this and what can we do to foster good
relationships with parents-in-law?
