Bnei Brak One of the Primary Victims of Budget Cuts
by A. Cohen
The Bnei Brak City Council held an emergency meeting last
week following outcries by party representatives on the
council who cite the further budget cuts--40 percent of
children's government allowances and a serious reduction in
support of Torah institutions--on the heels of other cuts two
months ago, as an instance of total disregard for the basic
needs of Israel's children.
IDF Nabs Master Bomber in Bethlehem
by Yated Ne'eman Staff
The army continues its nonpolitical security activities
throughout the Palestinian territory as it took up positions
in Bethlehem for a short stay. Soldiers aided by Shin Bet
agents captured three alleged masterminds behind last week's
bombing in Rishon Lezion and also behind a string of bombings
in Jerusalem, including the attack on the supermarket in
March.
Interest Rates Raised 1 Percent
by Yated Ne'eman Staff
On Monday Bank of Israel governor David Klein raised key
lending rates 1 percent, to 5.6 percent. This brings rates
almost back to the point at which they were last December
(5.8 percent) when they were slashed by 2 percent. Klein
warned that the central bank could continue to increase rates
further if inflation does not moderate.
Departing Citizens Need Passports
by Yated Ne'eman Staff
In a definite policy change that has disrupted travel plans
of many people, the Israeli authorities decided, as of May 1,
to enforce the long-standing regulation that anyone who can
get an Israeli passport must do so in order to leave the
country.
National Council for the Well Being of Children:
Plundering Children's Allowances is Criminal
by Yated Ne'eman Staff
Following approval of the "economic rescue" plan last week,
Dr. Yitzhak Kadman, chairman of the National Council for the
Well Being of Children, said the plan may save the economy
but would destroy the foundations of Israeli society in the
meantime."
Conference in Jerusalem to Mark Founding of World Agudas
Yisroel 90 Years Ago
by G. Leizer
The World Agudas Yisroel held a celebration in Jerusalem last
week to mark the 90th anniversary since its founding in
Kattowitz on the 12th of Sivan 5672. Held at Heichalei
Hasimchoh (Cheftzadi) in Jerusalem, the festive conference
was organized by the World Agudas Yisroel Federation, the
Executive Committee and the Agudas Yisroel Center in Eretz
Yisroel. Aguda heads, members of its institutions and
hundreds of public figures were in attendance.
Can't we Protect Kosher Consumers in New York?
by B. Isaac
Reacting to a federal appeals court ruling that New York
State's 118-year-old statutes aimed at protecting consumers
of kosher food are unconstitutional, Agudath Israel of
America called the decision "a judicial body- blow to the
unsuspecting consumer."
KINDNESS AMID TERROR
by Elaine Berkowitz
Long after the sirens and the screams have faded and the
stunned and bloody victims have been carted away, one group
remains at the scene of a terror attack in Israel. Bearded
men in neon yellow vests sort through the rubble, picking up
the pieces, literally, of those who didn't survive.
OPINION &
COMMENT
We Can All be Leviim
Chosen as a group because of their dedication to Hashem, the
Leviim were purified through special procedures detailed in
parshas Beha'alosecho. The result of this was a
special status whose essence is summarized in the succinct
statement by Hashem: Vehoyu li haLeviim -- The Leviim
are Mine (Bamidbar 8,14).
