Budget Opposition Mounts

There was widespread opposition to the latest round of cuts announced by the Finance Ministry for next year's budget. The Labor Party is threatening to vote against it, and one newly- installed minister already resigned in protest.

Arson and Vandalism in Degel HaTorah's Yerushalayim Offices

Reactions of outrage and shock were heard from all strata of chareidi Jewry in Eretz Yisroel and abroad, in reaction to the arson perpetrated against the Degel HaTorah offices in Jerusalem this past Friday morning, 17 Av. A group of thugs who seek to force their malevolent outlooks down the throats of the entire chareidi community, which displays total loyalty to the Torah leaders of the generation shlita, set a blaze in the Degel Hatorah movement's offices that destroyed most of the contents.

The Evolution of the Deferred Induction Law

The bill for deferred induction of talmidei yeshivos, known as the "Tal Law," was approved last week in the Knesset plenum, including a key paragraph that allows the Defense Minister to postpone, with no time limitations, restrictions or quotas, the military service of any talmid yeshiva or avreich for whom Toraso umnoso.

Half of Israel's Work Force is not Working

About 2.2 million of those of working age in Israel -- between ages 15 and 64 -- are not working nor are they seeking work. According to recent figures of the Vaad Hayeshivos, 37,000 men (who may not work at all) received draft deferrals under the old arrangements, so that all of these constitute less than 2 percent of all those not working. Other chareidi men generally work at a rate similar to all other Israelis.

Security Cameras in Old City to Comply with Directives of Gedolei HaPoskim

Israel Police plan to operate security cameras in the passageways of the Old City in accordance with halachic directives issued by gedolei haposkim, Major General David Tzur, staff director of the Internal Security Ministry, told Interior Committee Chairman Rabbi Moshe Gafni.

HaRav Levi Bistritzky, zt"l

HaRav Levi Bistritzky, zt"l, rav of Tzfas, was niftar early Sunday morning, 19 Menachem Av, in the Sieff Hospital in Tzfas. HaRav Bistritzky was 54 at the time of his petiroh. A large thong participated in his levaya which proceeded to the cemetery in Tzfas on Sunday afternoon.
