Israel's Tenth Largest City: Bnei Brak
by A. Cohen

With a population of 145,414--up 3 percent in two years--Bnei Brak is the tenth largest city in the country according to the Interior Ministry's current Population Registry.

City Secretary and Spokesman Avrohom Tannenbaum said these statistics, unlike figures provided by other sources, are completely current since they are updated instantly. The figures are based on the computerization of Malam Systems.

The city has a male population of 73,021 and a female population of 72,390. There are a total of 14,401 new immigrants, including 3,658 from Russia, 884 from the U.S., 51 from Ethiopia and only 29 from South Africa. Another 9,779 come from various other countries. In most chareidi communities the proportion of Anglo immigrants is much higher -- around 25 percent.

The population breakdown by age is as follows: 23,134 age 0- 5; 25,227 age 6-12; 16,695 age 13-17; 11,508 age 18-21; 6,209 age 22-24; 8,594 age 25-29; 7,252 age 30-34; 6,670 age 35-39; 6,547 age 40-44; 6,778 age 45-49; 8,626 age 50-54; 4,079 age 55-59; 3,238 age 60-64; 2,808 age 65-69; 2,883 age 70-74 and 6,930 over the age of 74.

In Bnei Brak the average family has more than 5 children, compared to a national average of 2.9 children per family. The municipal school system consists of 594 elementary school classrooms with 15,082 students (13,592 chareidi, 985 government-religious and 508 government-secular); 6,347 high- school classrooms (4,227 chareidi, 1,528 government-religious and 592 government-secular); 5,022 kindergarten classrooms (4,285 chareidi, 670 government-religious and 68 government- secular); 132 government-religious and 48 chareidi special- education classrooms. Of students under age eighteen, 19,000 are enrolled in Chinuch Atzmai educational institutions such as kindergartens, talmudei Torah, yeshivos ketanos and public girls' schools.

Among cities with a population of over 100,000 residents Bnei Brak has the highest life expectancy--77.4 for men and 81.1 for women--according to the Central Bureau for Statistics.
