Rabbi Moshe Gafni sent a letter last week to the Attorney
General demanding an investigation of the monetary sources
behind the Hitorerut movement. The demand was made following
suspicions that movement activities are subsidized by either
the Labor party or one of Ehud Barak's NPOs.
The Hitorerut movement, comprised of a number of anti-
religious youths, has been waging an intense incitement
campaign against the chareidi sector, demanding the draft of
yeshiva students. Movement activists received enormous
backing in the media, while its members repeatedly stress
that they are not acting out of political considerations.
It was learned last week that members of Hitorerut received
a request for demonstrations against him from outgoing Prime
Minister Ehud Barak. In the wake of these reports, Rabbi
Gafni demanded that the Attorney General investigate the
issue.
In his letter to the Attorney General, Rabbi Gafni claims
that it has become apparent that the Hitorerut movement
operates according to the outgoing Prime Minister's
directives. He notes, "The movement conducts demonstrations
at Barak's beck and call. When a demonstration would be to
his personal and political advantage, the movement
demonstrates. When Barak is against a particular
demonstration, it doesn't take place. I demand an
investigation of the financial sources of the movement's
activities. Is it subsidized by one of the NPOs which
functions on Barak's behalf?"
